Get the underlying data: national reload-water screen (GeoParquet)

This is the geospatial output behind our working paper, A Geometry-Based National Screen for Candidate Aerial-Firefighting Reload Water Sources.

It's a national dataset covering roughly 5.7 million U.S. water bodies, each measured for size, length, and width, and flagged for whether it could work as a reload point for helicopters, Fire Boss, or CL-415 aircraft.

A few things worth knowing before you download it:

  • It's a working output, not a finished tool. We're sharing it as-is, at this stage of the project, for people who want to see what the underlying data actually looks like.

  • It's a screen, not a green light. It only reflects the shape of mapped water. It doesn't account for depth, current water level, obstacles, or access.

  • Format: the file is in GeoParquet, a format built for large-scale vector geospatial data. You'll need tools that support it (e.g. GIS software or geospatial Python/R libraries) to open and work with it.

If you've read the paper and want to dig into the data itself, this is for you.

Complete the form below to get the file, we'll also keep you posted on future TracPlus Labs initiatives.

TESTIMONIALS

What our customers say

“The live tracking provided by TracPlus helps us to ensure safe distances are achieved between helicopters and drones, while also giving great situational awareness of all operations in the region.”

“TracPlus has changed the reporting of intelligence completely. It registers the exact location of where we pick up water, and how many litres we’re picking up. It’s tracking us to and from the fire. That way, the command centre can see how effective we are as it determines what our turn around times are.”

"The fact that we can monitor exactly where our park rangers are and what they’re doing means we can always respond with the necessary assistance they may need."
